A-ONE Cassette Interface
Authentic tape storage for your A-ONE Apple-1 replica
The A-ONE Cassette Interface brings one of the most iconic expansions from early home computing back to life. In the 1970s, cassette tape was the primary way to store programs and data. With this interface, your A-ONE Apple-1 replica can be used exactly as it was intended: loading and saving software on real cassette tape.
This board is a modern reinterpretation of the original Apple-1 cassette interface. Fully compatible with the classic workflow, but built using high-quality components and modern manufacturing standards.
A piece of computing history
The original Apple-1 had no built-in storage. Users depended on external solutions to preserve their programs. The cassette interface was a crucial upgrade: it made it possible to archive, share, and reload software — a huge step forward in usability.
With the A-ONE Cassette Interface, you experience this process exactly as early computer pioneers did. Audio signals are converted into digital data and back again. This is not an emulator or simulation — it is real, physical cassette communication, just like in 1976.
Operation
The interface connects directly to the A-ONE and communicates via standard audio lines:
-
MIC / LINE IN – write to tape
-
EAR / LINE OUT – read from tape
Start the interface from the monitor:
Type "C100R" to start the Cassette Interface
Write data to tape:
XXXX.YYYYW
Read data from tape:
XXXX.YYYYR
Where:
-
XXXX = start address
-
YYYY = end address
For full authenticity, the original Apple-1 Cassette Interface documentation can be followed.
Quality recommendations
Reliable data transfer on cassette depends on stable, accurately aligned audio playback and recording. We therefore recommend using a quality cassette deck or recorder for optimal performance. We strongly suggest premium models such as Panasonic units (e.g., the RQ-2102) for dependable results.
Lower-end or poorly aligned decks may produce unstable signals, leading to read/write errors. A well-maintained deck with consistent tape speed and low noise provides the strongest results when using the A-ONE Interface.
